That wasn't Sugar Ray. Sugar Ray Robinson ws the boxer and was in the band.
"He was born Ray Charles Robinson in Albany, Georgia. His name was shortened to Ray Charles when he entered show business to avoid confusion with boxer Sugar Ray Robinson. "
